Troubleshooting an Optical Mouse

mouse sensor not working

Dependent upon the type of operating system a user is utilizing, as well as the model and settings of a mouse, there are multiple variables that could negatively impact performance.

For starters, let’s cover the basics.

Have you checked how and if your mouse is correctly plugged in? If wireless, have you ensured that you’ve utilized the appropriate software to connect the wireless technology with your computer?

Dependent upon build, a wireless or tethered mouse can perform poorly if the plug is hanging out, or perhaps even if the corresponding software is out of date. Check to make sure that your mouse is completely plugged in – in particular that it’s not “hanging” or that any of the USB plug is damaged or altered. Sometimes it can be as simple as disconnecting, and then reconnecting your mouse.

Are you using an appropriate surface or mousepad for the type of mouse you are using? Often, hard surfaces don’t necessarily guarantee adequate mouse-response or functionality. Mousepads are made with a certain, soft material that makes it easy to pick up traction and signal to the PC where you’re pointing or clicking. Also, check and consider cleaning your mousepad regularly every few months – dependent upon use.

Even with the proper software and installation, sometimes updating or reconfirming settings is necessary (see updating above) in order to continue using your mouse properly.

“Obstructions” (obstacles) can also negatively impact your connection and sensory of your – presumably infrared, or trackball technology – mouse. Ensure that it’s cleaned of any dirt or debris – with a compressed air-blower – and do the same for the surface in which you’re using.
Last but not least, sometimes extended use over long periods of time (months to years) a mouse simply has too much wear, scratches, or build-up on the bottom of the sensor and will require professional cleaning or ‘restoration’. If all else fails, consult with a PC-help technician or the manufacturing company that you originally purchased the device from.
